Synopsis

Suburbs of Los Angeles.

Enid (Thora Birch) and Rebecca (Scarlett Johansson) are two slightly eccentric girls who have graduated from high school, but instead of going to college or getting a job, they plan to rent an apartment and live together in order to find out what they want to do.

One day, Enid jokingly applies for a dating ad, and meets Seymour (Steve Buscemi), a blues record collector, and becomes increasingly attracted to him. However, Enid shows no signs of becoming independent, and when she does start working, she is fired within a day. Enid becomes more and more aware that she is a social misfit. Rebecca, on the other hand, starts working at a coffee shop and gradually adjusts to adult society. As the rift between the two gradually widens, Enid makes a decision…

☆☆☆

Adolescence is a thing.

Girls who are unique are not popular.

Unique girls are attracted to older men.

Individualistic girls like people who are as nerdy or nerdier than they are.

But unique girls are really struggling.

Individualistic girls hate themselves.

They may not fit in at school, they may not be able to communicate well with others, or they may be disliked because their likes and dislikes are too clear, their tone of voice is harsh, or their attitude is bad.

If there are teenagers who are struggling with this, I would like to tell them that they don't have to go to school, and they don't have to force themselves to fit into society.

If your parents, teachers, or friends try to force you into a mold, it's better to reject them.

You may be alone for a while.

Sometimes things just don't work out, and sometimes things backfire.

That's just a moment in a long life.

But for young people, that moment may seem like an eternity.

The main character in the movie is just such a type. I'm sure many people can relate. The suburbs in the U.S. also look boring, and the scenery of chain stores along the nondescript national highway is vaguely similar.

The ending of this movie is a matter of opinion, so I won't go into the ending.

The main attraction is the kitschy 90's fashion and interior. Big CRT TVs, skeleton telephones, leopard print skirts, work boots…70's vintage clothes are all cute.

With the addition of cynical conversations, the boring everyday life is depicted in a comical way.

He collects blues music from the '30s and '40s, and of course he wears two-tag pants and a shirt. He's a nerd within a nerd, and I can see why he tugs at Enid's heartstrings.

As a fan of Steve Buscemi, I can't miss this movie.

Brad Renfro plays a supporting role, but I was wondering what happened to him, because he didn't look like his old self, and he died of an overdose about four years after this movie.

Although the time has passed and this movie is 20 years old, it is one of the best movies about adolescence.
